The Old Man and the Sea
The Old Man and the Sea, written by Ernest Hemingway, is a tale of an old, weathered fisherman, Santiago. The story revolves around his journey out to sea and the battle with a Marlin. ... Eventually sharks came, which was not a surprise to the old man but still a disappointment, and ate all the meat. ... Many might say that the old man failed, but that all depends on what is important in life to that indiviual. ... The old man was triumphant because he endures and wins. ... If the old man’s intentions were purely based upon materialistic gain he would not have told the boy to stay with the other boat (10). The old man expresses his love and concern many times throughout the book not only for other people but also for the sea. When Hemingway writes, “He always thought of the sea as la mar which is what people call her in Spanish when they love her. ... The narrator is trying to say that Santiago was friends with the sea and respected her and the younger fishermen just want to use to sea for money . Several other times thought out Santiago’s quest, the narrator makes references to how the old man views himself in regards to nature, specifically the sea and the fish.
