They were not simply treated as just visual spectacle, the also were viewed as a form of ritual purification, Aristotles catharsis, which gives rise to pathos, another Greek word, meaning instructive suffering. ... The power of Sophoclean drama was located in the interaction between his chorus and the aspects of Greek theatre including action, dialogue and spectacle. Sophocles, in his play Oedipus Rex, used a Chorus to unite and amplify all aspects, which allowed the audience to experience the cathartic effect and to feel what the Chorus itself feels, to be there in the action.

The opening scene of Oedipus Rex displays the true effect of the Chorus. The Chorus, who plays the citizens of Thebes, is in supplication; they are pleading with their saviour, the great man Oedipus, for deliverance once again from the horrendous pestilence that plagues their land. The supplicating is a powerful symbol of the people’s misery and it elevates Oedipus to an almost god-like status. ... Their movements are slow and solemn and the way that the mass, the Chorus, is at its knees pleading before Oedipus establishes and reinforces a mood of anguish and sorrow. ... ” (Page 26)

The Chorus in Oedipus Rex entered the amphitheatre alone at certain times during the play, which were called the parados’. ... Religion was the only attribute lacking from many of the audience members at the time of the play, so the understanding of the parados, the interaction between dialogue, action and historical setting, these citizens were able to achieve experience the full cathartic effect. ... This applies in the scene where the bloody faced Oedipus, seeks comfort and support from the Chorus.
