Commentary This passage which was chosen is in Book V, line 203 – 214. After many years with Odysseus trapped amid Calypso on her island, all of the gods except Poseidon gather again on Mount Olympus to discuss Odysseus's fate. Athena conveys a speech in support of the hero, which prevails, and Zeus intervenes. Hermes, messenger of the gods, is sent to Calypso's island to tell her that Odysseus at last is allowed to leave so that he can return home. In this passage, we perceive what Odysseus truly wants, immortality.
