Proverty in the US

In the two articles, Garrett Hardin and Peter Singer take a stand on the poverty issue around the world. While Hardin thinks continuously providing food to the poor is not a good idea, Singer discussed the possible reasons why we should help those poor countries. Hardin and Singer show their disagreements of fact and belief. Their first disagreement obviously illustrates their difference in belief. Hardin use a “lifeboat” metaphor to emphasize why we shouldn’t help the poor. He states that if we forcefully squeeze more people to the full boat, then the boat is going to sink. The reason Hardin thinks this way is that a boat can only hold certain amount of capacities, as the world can only feed certain amounts of people. If we divided a little bit of food to everyone, then no one would get enough and eventually we are all going to suffer starvation. Singer disagrees with Hardin’s argument, he believes that “the world does produce enough food” p540, but the distribution among the product is disproportionate; therefore, rich people have extra food to waste on animals, while poor people are suffering death through “absolute poverty”.
