Poetrys Dramatic Structure

Poetry’s Dramatic Structure:
Structure is the foundation to a well-written poem. ...
According to Harmon and Holman, poetry that consists of a “dramatic form or some element of dramatic technique” (Harmon and Holman 165) is considered to be dramatic poetry. The elements found in dramatic structures is best defined through Aristotle’s philosophy. Any literary work that consists of an introduction, a rising action, a climax or crisis (turning point), a falling action, and ends with a catastrophe is dramatic. John Milton’s, Paradise Lost is a classic poem that is based on Aristotle’s definition of a dramatic structure.
The introduction or exposition of a dramatic piece usually creates the “tone, gives the setting, introduces the characters, and supplies other facts necessary” (Harmon and Holman 165) to comprehend the epic poem since they are prone to begin in medias res (in the middle of action). ... Paradise Lost has shown the elements found in an introduction of a literary work that follows the dramatic structure. ... This marks the fall of the main character, Satan, and the last part of a piece that follows Aristotle’s dramatic structure:
…I go to judge
On Earth these thy transgressors, but thou knowst,
Whoever judg’d, the worst on me must light,
When time shall be, for so I undertook
Before thee; and not repenting, this obtaine
Of right, that I may mitigate their doom
On me deriv’d…(X, 70-76)
Dramatic structure in poetry follows a systematic pattern that builds the tension of the literary piece.
