Essay 1
29 September 2003
In the John Updike short story, “A & P”, the character Sammy is a middle-class boy who demonstrates the rebellious nature of youth. His character narrates to the reader through a short sequence of events inside and A & P supermarket within a conservative town in New England. ... ” He also uses descriptive phrases like “school superintendant stare” and “spokesman for A & P values” which portray Lengel as a conservative and authoritative figurehead who Sammy does not agree with. ... This is important because both adults in the story are described with like characteristics and this gives insight on Sammy’s feelings towards his elders. ...
Sammy’s character is typical of rebellious youth in any generation. Every young man goes through similar conflicts as they cross that line into adulthood. ... The story is not about a spectacular phenomenon, but more of a great insight into the mind of an adolescent boy.
