Poetry of the First World War In order to understand how war poetry changed it is necessary to understand the historical content. World War One started at midnight, on the 4th August 1914. We know the audience of the poem was aimed at the young, working class men because the language used was slang and informal “lads” The effect, was that it made the poem sound more friendly, which helped the audience onto your side, making the war sound non-threatening and hides the instruction to join up. ... They are extended metaphor (war is a game), male ego and verbs connected to game. This helped to bring the message across that war was going to be a game. ... Men fighting battles on the western Front soon felt that the picture of war as a glorious adventure was false. They saw the horror and reality of war. The reality of war was shown to them as bombs dropping everywhere causing explosions, destruction of families, homes and friends. |
