A Painful Relationship
In the Teach Us to Outgrow Our Madness passage (185-186), Oe uses motifs such as hands, pain, and scabs to convey that the fat man and Eeyore seclude themselves from society and cause each other pain, and with pain comes a “dark” and “dull” world (Oe 186). ... The joining of hands through a father and son can be benign, but the bond that the fat man and Eeyore have is considered unhealthy because they cause each other pain which is ironic to a father/son relationship that is supposed to be one of joy.
