Cheever’s Stories Represent his Life L.S. Klepp says, “Railroad stations, with their pathos of arrival and departure, beginnings and endings, loom large in Cheever’s fiction.” In “The Five-Forty-Eight,” the boss was left crying, lying on the ground where the woman who he victimized victimized him. Cheever frequently wrote about the man left behind, left out of whatever is going on.
