"The Pardoner’s Tale," Part of The Canterbury Tales:
A Short Analysis
This story was told by the Pardoner in the 3rd person, providing us with both the thoughts as well as the actions of the characters. The Pardoner was not a character in the tale—just one who told facts or observations of something that had occurred. One of the many travelers to Canterbury, he was a somewhat pseudo-religious character, more bent on lining his own pockets with gold than offering true absolution to parishioners. ... The major conflict of the tale is to do good and battle Death or get sidelined by greed and succumb to the evil ravages of Death—the only outcome of which is to die.
This tale is set in late 14th century England on a pilgrimage to Canterbury to pay homage to St. ... For "The Pardoner’s Tale," the Pardoner first consented to tell a merry tale, then agreed to tell a moral story (282). ... He was squelched in his efforts by the Host and peace was made among all by the Knight as the troupe continued its travels toward Canterbury (296). ... He does, however, have difficulty separating the telling of the tale from actually sermonizing to parishioners, as is evidenced when he begins to hawk his relics after his narrative is ended (Chaucer 71). But one wonders if this is done as avarice, a test of his skills as a salesman, or simply a matter of "automatic pilot" (Chaucer 71) after the tale is ended.
