The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has established National Air Quality Standards for air pollutants such as lead, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. These standards were created in order to protect the public from harmful amounts of pollution. The EPA enforces these federal regulations with time periods when the area must meet a certain standard. P2 is also a program that was created to protect public health and the environment.
