Petruchio is certainly a bully and perhaps a sadist A modern post feminist audience could not

The Taming of The Shrew by Shakespeare shows the worst example of a chauvinistic male in the main character Petruchio. Although the play was meant to be a comedy, the obvious sadistic pleasure Petruchio experiences would upset any post-feminist audience as the cruel actions can no longer be deemed funny. ... By masking this violence with humour, The Taming of The Shrew is seen only as a slapstick comedy, yet the underlying message of aggression emanating from Petruchio will not be appreciated by any feminist.
Petruchio¡¦s vulgarity in this play clearly shows his ruthless manner. For example, in his first verbal battle with Katherina, Petruchio played with her words to suggest an obscene gesture; ¡§What, with my tongue in your tail? ... In this short exclamation we can see not only Petruchio¡¦s shameful vulgarity, but also his opinion of Katherina. ... Here, Petruchio shows us only a fragment of his talent with swearwords as ¡§whoreson, beetle-headed, flap-eared¡¨, ¡§foolish knave¡¨ and ¡§logger-headed¡¨ are words frequently used in the play. In these lines, Petruchio¡¦s aggressiveness is also visible as he throws the food at the servants while he speaks. ...
Although the negative aspects mentioned above are enough to discourage most audiences, Petruchio¡¦s ¡§taming¡¨ of Katherina, which comprises domestic abuse, proves that he is a contemptuous and sadistic character.
