She is a dynamic character, transforming from the young Latina “huerquita” (1219), unknowing of her sexuality, into the writer, who through creative expression of her shameful past realizes that she deserves to be “comfortable in her skin” (1221), and finally into the empowered woman with a “panocha” (1219)…and choices…and heart…and soul…and mind…that in the end allows her to reconcile all of her “sides” with the expectations she had of herself and the expectations others had of her.
