In the novel Pan From the Papers of Lieutenant Thomas Glahn by Knut Hamsun, the author added the document “Glahn’s Death” to show an outsider’s view of Glahn and his way of life instead of letting the reader solely rely on the information from Glahn’s personal papers. The epilogue entitled “Glahn’s Death” serves as a change of perception for the reader. All through the book, the mood directed toward Glahn is one of misunderstanding and pity. He looses his love Edvarda to a senseless game of tag, and he looses his second love to revenge and jealousy on the part of Mr. Mack. On the other hand, when one reads the epilogue, the mood of misunderstanding changes drastically to a mood of disloyalty and hatred.
