“The Quilts”
“ In both of them were scraps of dresses Grandma Dee worn fifty and more years ago. ... The quilts were significant because they were handmade and passed down from generation to generation. The quilts were created from fabric pieces of different family member’s clothing. Symbolizing the lives and struggles of women in the family, the quilts were important to the family’s history. The quilts, precious and valuable, created a debate between which daughter should receive.
In the short story “ Everyday Use,” I believe the youngest sister Maggie should have the quilts. ... Uneducated, shy, and a homebody, Maggie sincerely understands the values of the family quilts. Educated, bold, and pretty, Dee the oldest sister does not appreciate the quilts for their sentimental value. Dee wanted the quilts to represent and appreciate what her life is not.

If the quilts were given to Maggie she would put them to everyday use. Because Maggie was a homebody and stays at home with her mother, she had a better understanding of what each piece of fabric means that make up the quilts. ... Intimidated by Dee, she states that she does not need the possession of the quilts to remind her of Grandma Dee. If Maggie did receive the quilts, she planned to add to them.
