Rape Fantasies

"Rape Fantasies" by Margaret Atwood is an entertaining recap of a conversation among several women co-workers during their lunch hour bridge game. One of the women poses a question after reading a magazine story on rape prevention. "How about it, girls, do you have rape fantasies?" (75) is the opening for a conversation that moves from woman to woman with fantasies from a cat-burglar scenario, to bubble baths. Estelle, the narrator, reminds the women that those aren’t rape fantasies, “[Its] just some guy you havent met formally who happens to be…attractive. ... Rape is when theyve got a knife or something and you dont want to. ... Estelle then describes her rape fantasy where she fights off her attacker by squirting him with the juice from a plastic lemon. At this point lunch ends and Estelle continues to describe more elaborate rape fantasies. ... Her character deepens with description of one her fantasies about "this short, ugly fellow [who] comes up and grabs my arm .
