King Lear, a play written by William Shakespeare displays many themes in its content, such as the theme of justice, loyalty verses betrayal, and madness. However none of these themes are more evident than the role of fate and fortune. Throughout the play the audience sees that if not for fate and fortune many of the characters would not be able to rise above each other. The role of fortunes wheel also plays a significant role, in that we see characters that are able to rise above their restrictions to become powerful, and consequently characters that are in places of authority fall to the wayside. There is a German proverb that says “every person is the architect of his or her own fate”, this is true in King Lear. Many characters such as King Lear, Goneril, Regan, and Edmund create, and are the cause of their own fate, which eventually is subject to fortunes wheel.
The character that sets all events into motion is King Lear. ... The event that placed Lear’s demise occurs when he divides his kingdom into two.
