In present-day American culture race plays a major role in our lives. Living in suburban America formed my first opinion of race. ... Broadening my horizons and moving out of suburban life to a big city rapidly changed my views on race and ethnicity. Race is more than someone’s name or one’s physical characteristics; race is a state of mind, a specific way of thinking unique to everyone. ... I did not even think of myself of having any type of connection with the Mexican race because of my background. My parents, my teachers, and everybody I associated with never made my race an issue. ... In my mind I could not be associated with a race that has that reputation. At this point in my life I felt ashamed of my name and my race.
