“Love at first sight” is a concept explored in many plays, novels, poems, movies, and songs. ... In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the title characters are traditionally thought to have experienced this immediate love. ... However, are they truly in love? More specifically, is Romeo really in love with Juliet? Upon analysis, the reasons for his supposed “true love” seem much less convincing than Juliet’s. By nature, Romeo is impetuous, fickle and sexually motivated. And, tragically, when his love for Juliet faces the ultimate test of overcoming their families’ ongoing feud, he fails by killing Tybalt and ruining the couple’s chance at happiness. ... What if Romeo had not slain Tybalt and was free to live in wedded bliss with his Juliet? Unfortunately, even this path of existence may not have insured that Romeo and Juliet would have been happy. With examination of evidence seen throughout the play, Romeo’s impulsive nature, tendency for fickleness and sexual motivation would have never lent itself to a fulfilling long-term relationship. ...
