|
American Romanticism Hawthornes fiction in American Romanticism is displayed strongly in the character of Beatrice. It is within her that we find a belief that the beauty and mystery of nature often have moral lessons, a fascination with exotics and the past, an interest in supernatural, and interest in human emotions and psychological depths of human nature. She, being the daughter of Rappiccini, is the focus of romance in this short story, Hawthorne portrays her as an object of affection that is beautiful and peculiar. Beatrice believes that the beauties and mysteries of nature are a source of moral lessons in that she knows the deceptive nature of the beauties and mysteries given off by nature. She says to Giovanni, forget whatever you may have fancied in regard to me.
