When a government drops a bomb into a crowd of people, it is called war; when a disgruntled employee beats his boss to death with a 3-hole punch, it is called murder; and when a hitman, without any remorse or second thought, shoots a person because of a contractual obligation, it is called pulp. The term “pulp” was first brought to the attention of mainstream audiences by Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 film unabashedly titled, “Pulp Fiction.” Preceeding the opening credits, Tarantino provides the audience with a dictionary definition of pulp, “a magazine or book containing lurid subject matter and being characteristically printed on rough, unfinished paper” (screen 1). Although somewhat accurate, this is a rather poor definition of what pulp truly is. Pulp is better defined not as its own genre, but merely as an element in the much bigger genre of the noir, in literature that being roman noir and in cinema, film noir.
