The Self-Made Man in Franklin and Hawthorne
Benjamin Franklin and Nathaniel Hawthorne both explore the virtue of being a self-made man in their respective writings, The Way to Wealth and My Kinsman, Major Molineux. Franklin’s writing chronicles some of his adages from Poor Richard’s Almanac, which provides aphorisms, memorable sayings that teach a lesson, on how to live and prosper. Hawthorne’s short story follows a youth named Robin on his travails to seek the assistance of a distant family member. Both works are very unlike, but still represent a similar theme in the “self-made man”.
Franklin’s aphorisms teach one to live frugally and work hard in order to achieve a truly noble existence.
