English Coursework “Songs of Innocence and Experience”- William Blake Discuss the following pairs of poems, exploring the relationships and comparisons within and between them. Look especially at attitudes and themes beneath the surface and how Blake achieves his effect. “Nurse’s Song” and “The Garden of Love” “The Ecchoing Green” and “London” “On Anothers sorrow” and “The poison Tree” “The Blossom” and “The Sick Rose” “The Chimney Sweeper” William Blake, a poet and illustrator of the 18th and 19th century was witness to great changes throughout Britain and the world, including the French revolution which over threw the monarchy giving hope to many who had been repressed by corrupt monarchs and governments. His “Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience Showing the two contrary states of the Human Soul” are strong evidence of his Anti-Authoritarian views, and other feelings regarding changes that happened throughout his lifetime. Nurse’s Song & The Garden of Love The “Nurse’s Song” from “Songs of Innocence” depicts a scene of innocence and tranquillity. ... Although Blake was not well educated we can assume that his sometimes over zealous use of “And” was not a grammatical error but there to stress the simplicity of the poem or to go against the established convention of literacy. The poem has many layers yet there is an underlying theme of innocence being in conflict with experience. ... Through the Nurse, Blake is able to clarify his own views that we should live by the natural order like those innocent animals. The rhyming of the 2nd and 4th line of the stanzas in the “Nurse’s song” from “Songs of Experience” is similar to the poem from the “Songs of Innocence”, the rhythm of the poems however, differ. In contrast to the light-hearted feel of “Nurse’s song” from “Songs of Innocence” the words from “Songs of Experience” gives a more sinister and darker world altering the rhythm. Unlike the Nurse in “Songs of Innocence” who derives pleasure from her young charges the Nurse in “Songs of Experience” feels no joy over the children only pain and anguish. Again there is a feeling of suppression regarding the Nurse, in this poem we can presume that a traumatic experience in her youth causes her on reflection to turn “green and pale”. ... Just as in the “Nurse’s song” from “Songs of Innocence” the Nurse’s experience warns her that the darkness and night holds a paramount danger. In the last line of the second stanza Blake comments that through our “winter and night” of adulthood we “disguise” our feelings and views towards each other and so become deceitful, like in the “Poison Tree”. “The Garden of Love” from the “Songs of Experience” can be interpreted at many levels including the garden representing England and the Industrial Revolution that changed the way many of British people lived. However I feel that Blake wrote this poem to reiterate his discord with the organised church. Although Blake believed passionately in God he criticised the single-minded attitude and constraints of orthodox religion that went against his own emancipated idealistic views. Blake’s comment that “A chapel was built in the midst” reflecting the churches integral part of life and its pervading influence on how people lived. |
