The Rookie The 2001 release of The Rookie is based on the true story of Jim Morris and his family from Big Lake, Texas. The movie is about a small town baseball coach that has always had a lifetime dream of being in the major leagues. His team makes a deal with him that if they go win the district championship; he has to try out for the majors. Due to time constraints of a big screen production and budget concerns a few minute details were left out and even changed. However, the movie succeeded in depicting the actual events that took place in Jim Morris’s life. Jim Morris grew up in a military family that required him to be moved a lot from school to school. His dad’s last duty station was in Big Lake, Texas, which unfortunately did not have a baseball team. He played football for the high school and went to a Junior College. In Junior College he played baseball and got discovered by a baseball scout. He was out of the major leagues before he turned 25 years of age due to an elbow injury and a shoulder blowout.
