The Road To Independence In “She Unnames Them”
In her short piece of fiction “She Unnames Them”, Ursula Le Guin explores the power that names hold and the authority and control that a name-giver has over the named. She particularly explores the relationship between men and women and the role that names and language play between them. Le Guin’s use of unique structure, first person point-of-view, allusion, tension between characters, and other literary devices and techniques help build the idea that unnaming could lead to independence. Le Guin’s background in science fiction writing can be seen in the opening of the story; she writes with a sense of mystery. She does not give her readers every piece of information, nor does she frame the story in a traditional way. Rather, she brings the reader into the middle of the story and does not explicitly explain who all the characters are or the main theme. For the first five paragraphs, the reader has no idea who is speaking or what, exactly, is going on.
