During the 1930s and 1940s, baseball had already had a tremendous effect on African-Americans. Not only had the Negro Leagues become popular, but African-Americans also began playing in Major League Baseball. Men including Jackie Robinson, Satchel Paige, and Hank Aaron are just a few of the bellwethers who inspired other African-Americans to play America’s past-time. August Wilson illustrates the overwhelming influence baseball had on Troy, the main character in the drama “Fences.” Throughout this drama, it is evident that baseball has a significant role in Troy’s everyday life. ... 169) and a ‘baseball bat leaning against the tree’(p. ... Wilson uses these two essential objects for the purpose of foreshadowing that baseball will be a vital element to the drama. The first baseball analogy is seen in a conversation between Troy, Bono, and Rose. Rose mentions that Troy’s drinking is going to put him to death, which immediately sent Troy into a tangent comparing death with baseball.
