Trancendental Voices

Transcendental Voices Henry David Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts on July 12, 1817. He is best known for the book Walden. “This was part of his experiment in simple living, placing nature above materialism in private life and ethics above traditionalism.” Thoreau graduated from Harvard in 1837, and then returned to Concord and became a close friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson and other transcendentalists. Thoreau built a small cabin in 1845 on Emerson’s land near Walden Pond and lived there for two years. “His purpose in going to the pond was to simplify his life, reduce his expenses, and devote his time to writing and observing nature.” His experiment had an outcome of one of the most well known books, Walden. Ralph Waldo Emerson had a huge impact on Thoreau’s life and that is why I chose to read some of his works. Ralph Waldo Emerson was born on May 25, 1803 in Boston, Massachusetts. He is widely regarded as one of America’s most influential authors, philosophers, and thinkers. Emerson became one of America’s best known and best loved 19th century figures. In Thoreau’s Journals he gives us a biography of Emerson. This is a portion of what Thoreau wrote. “Emerson is a critic, poet, philosopher, with talent not so conspicuous, not so adequate to his task; but his field is still higher, his task more arduous. Lives a far more intense life; seeks to realize a divine life; his affections and intellect equally developed. Has advanced farther, and a new heaven opens to him. Love and Friendship, Religion, Poetry, the Holy are familiar to him. The life of an Artist; more variegated, more observing, finer perception; not so robust, elastic; practical enough in his field; faithful, a judge of men. There is no such general critic of men and things, no such trustworthy and faithful man.
