Twelfth Night- A Farce Comedy The purpose of comedy is to show the flaws and imperfections of humans. The whole play of Twelfth Night is about the transition of the innocents (Viola and Sebastian) from the unmarried to the married state, and the more, and less, successful quests for marriage of other more worldly characters. Twelfth Night is so humourous as a play because its humor is created by such a variety of sources and means. If the reader breaks the play up into its various scenes, the reader will find that Shakespeare has used different types of Comedy at different moments, and in connection with different characters, all of which could consist of the comedy types of farce, masque, character, dark, fantasy, or Romantic. In Twelfth Night you will find characters in disguise, including disguises which involve cross-dressing; mistaken identity; romantic misunderstandings - all of which are successfully resolved and can clearly be determined as a Farce comedy. Many would choose to categorize this work as a farce, for its complicated plot, slapstick humor, and the mistaken identities/disguise element. Readers would consider this to be a Farce Comedy based on the ridiculously complicated plot and frantic activity. ... It could not have been a Dark comedy, because it was not a basic story and had no seriousness or tragedy in it except for the pining love each held for one another, but no real tragedy had taken place. |
