Radioactivity causes matter to release certain forms of radiation as the result of changes in the nuclei of the atoms that make up the matter. There are many medical and non-medical uses and dangers, which are created from radioactivity. Uses of radioactivity 1. In the past few years, the use of radioactivity in medicine has been increasing. The main uses are diagnosis and treatment for various diseases. · Cancer treatment – Gamma rays can kill living cells and so they are used to kill cancer cells without a difficult surgery. This is process called Radiotherapy and it works because unlike healthy cells, cancer cells can’t repair themselves. It is important that the dose is in the correct amount needed. If it were too much then too many healthy cells will be destroyed and if it were too little then it would be hard to stop the cancer from spreading in time. Some cancers are easy to cure with radiotherapy, but for lung cancer it is hard damaging healthy cells.
