When Worlds Collide

When Worlds Collide When Shawn Fanning launched his peer to peer software (Napster) in 1999 do you think he had any inkling as to what would happen next? What did happen next? The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) filed a lawsuit against the Napster Co. The RIAA claimed Napster was guilty of copyright infringement. Hank Berry, head of Napster has this to say “The Music Industry has strongly overreacted to a problem that does not exist. Napster is helping not hurting the recording industry and artists. More access to music leads to more interest in music and more music sales (Weekly Reader, 3)”. In support of Hank Barry’s statement in this article Fred Durst a musician of Limp Bizkit says ”We happen to be of the school of thought that it is nice to have more fans, not less.” I agree the music industry has overreacted. It was a logical progression from the introduction of compact disks to the CD-RW drives that would enable us to make copies of the CD’s. We then had the ability to take CD audio format (which takes a lot of disk space) and convert it to MP3 format (which takes much less disk space.) Now we have MP3 players. As technology advances so must the industries that are involved in the advancements ie. the music industry. Instead of going with the flow the RIAA has decided to strong-arm the consumers (who are partly responsible for the food on their table) into lawsuits that will only drive a wedge between these consumers and the music Industry. When the RIAA filed suit against Napster I don’t think anyone had a clue that they would go after the users of Napster and other such programs. A court ruled that the Peer to Peer software Grokster and Morpheus could not be held liable for copyright infringement that occurred as a result of people using their software. In another court Internet Service Provider Verizon was told they had 14 days to turn over the name of a subscriber accused of offering music files for download using the Kazaa file-swapping service. (Bowman, Cnet News.com).
