Over the centuries art has progressed significantly. In the early centuries of the 2nd millennium, the theme of the painting was usually either religious or portrait. There were many paintings showing the Annunciation or the Crucifixion. Through the Renaissance period, the religious theme began to fade while landscapes became more common. The portraits and landscapes were painted very realistically.
