Awake and sing

Awake and Sing (Director’s emphasis on characters) I went to go see Awake and Sing on Thursday, October 16 at the University of Illinois in Chicago Theatre. At first, I had a very careless impression of the actors that performed up on the stage, but as the performance continued I developed a bigger interest in the production and the play overall. The performance was a bizarre tale of Jewish family life in the Bronx during the Great Depression. Right from the beginning I got the impression that the characters didn’t really know each other, not to mention that they were supposed to be a family. The continuous amounts of lust, lies, tears, and marriage made me very suspicious about their family ties all throughout the performance. I was never really interested in the play because it didn’t connect with me or my inner emotions. I was often asking myself was it the actors fault?, the director’s fault?, or maybe my fault as the audience? One of the most significant aspects of this production were the characters. I think that the characters were affected very deeply in the play. The main character presented to us was a woman full of rage named Bessie Berger. She did a very good job vocalizing this rage on stage. The source of Bessie Berger’s rage, anger, and frustration was never really clear to me. Bessie seems to lie a lot to her husband Myron as well as to the other men on stage.
