Early versions had an orange cover and were called 'Scholastic Notes and Translations'. Name changed to 'Coles Notes' with familiar black and yellow striped covers in early 1950s. At one time 'Coles Notes' were sold in 73 countries. Exports were phased out by the late 1980s. Even at the height of exporting, Canada was still the best market by far. 'Coles Notes' sell in the hundreds of thousands in Canada every year. Study aids were a Canadian invention. In the U.S., the popular study guide "Cliffs Notes" were developed from 'Coles Notes'.
