Mori Arinori

Mori’s articles “On Wives and Concubines” are likely addressed to the intellectual elite in society. Because his articles were published in the Meiroku Zasshi, a magazine that targeted the “intellectual elite of the capital,” (Braisted) it would not be too far fetched to assume that Mori targeted the same audience. However, despite the widespread reading of the Meiroku Zasshi by male intellectuals, Mori may have also hoped that some of the literate middle-upper class women would read his documents, and promote his beliefs within the home.
