The Experience In 1619, the first Africans arrived in America as indentured servants settling in Jamestown, Virginia. This horrible journey toward slavery started with the development of the New World, and the territorial colonies it created. Families were being torn apart all because America needed more servants to care for their plantations. Black slave workers were highly prized “possessions”, for the reason that this economy being run in America was very dependent on manual labor. Mostly in the south, the black slaves were needed to work long hard hours on the plantations, maintaining products such as indigo, tobacco, and sugar cane. For the blacks who had to surrender to slavery, many of them thought this was the beginning of the end of any freedom and chance at a good life they might have had for themselves, their families, and their future. In the Virginia colony of the 1620’s, it was the land of great expectations. Although Virginia did go through its fair share of hard times of struggling with harsh winters, disease, and early death, it was looked at as the “boom county.” After all, it was one of the first places settled in the New World. When plantations’ starting emerging and trade was becoming ones source of income, the demand for laborers on plantations was becoming a necessity. Those of success and power began purchasing people who were dependent for the amount of labor that was needed.
