Objection to Notes from the Underground from the point of view of Nikolay Chernyshevsky

After reading Zapiski iz podpolya, which I will refer hereafter by its English name of Notes from the Underground, I realized that some people do not have an accurate understanding of the philosophical position laid out in my book, Chto delat (What is to be Done? ... Fyodor Dostoevsky’s weak arguments reduced my ideas to the point of absurdity. ... I will not only prove my own point of view to be correct and strong, but I will do so using the Underground Man’s own arguments.
Dostoevsky’s narrator is the Underground Man, a pitiable and indecisive creature who simultaneously hates and envies the “men of action” in St. ... The Underground Man disagrees with my psychological egoism, and says that man often intentionally acts in a way that is not in his best interest. ... ” (Dostoevsky 67)
Common sense seems to bear the Underground Man’s arguments out. ... The Underground Man also says, “One is not to blame in being a scoundrel,” and with this, I fully agree. The vicious nature of man most often springs from ignorance. ...
If the underground man knows that going to the doctor will end his suffering and does not go, he is not acting in his best interest. In fact, all that he gains from this course of action is pain. ... The Underground Man would have us believe that these men disprove psychological egoism. ...
Another point which was completely misunderstood was my view of determinism. The Underground Man claims sarcastically, that science will soon find the causes of all human action, and that, “All human actions will then, of course, be tabulated according to these laws, mathematically, like tables of logarithms up to 108,000, and entered into an index…that there will be no more incidents or adventures in the world. ... However, there is a very important point to consider. ... From moment to moment, everything is changing everywhere, and every slight change could completely alter the actions of an individual at a given time.
