Abraham Lincoln Take a Stand on the Kansas-Nebraska Act Yesterday I was sent to Nebraska to report from President Lincoln’s speech about the Kansas-Nebraska act. The west is expanding rapidly, and Proslavery Congressmen want a free territory in Kansas. Stephen A. Douglas, chairman of the Senate Committee on Territories provided a bill for the creation of two new territories—Kansas and Nebraska—instead of one. The first one would be a slave state, the second free. President Lincoln made it clear right from the start that his hope is that slavery will not go either to Kansas or Nebraska. Even though it is not sure that it will be that way. There are already five slave states including District of Columbia, all north of the Missouri compromise line. Within those five stats there is more than 867, 000 slaves. That is one-fourth of all slaves in the nation. According to President Lincoln that is more than enough. We need to do something to stop the slavery from spreading up north, especially now when the restriction is removed. In Nebraska there is no law concerning the subject of slavery, but according to Lincoln that will not be an obstacle for people that wants to take their slaves to Nebraska. Because who tells the negro that he is now a free man? No one! He will keep on working for his master unwitting that he is a free man. Wherever slavery has been introduced it has been without law. What we need is a law that is regulating slavery as an already existing thing. Another key point in President Lincoln’s speech was humanity. Only a few percent of all people that are born are tyrants. That number is not bigger in the slave states than in the free.
