After World War II, a republic was set up in the southern half of the Korean Peninsula which call ˇ°South Koreaˇ± while a Communist-style government was installed in the north which call ˇ°North Koreaˇ±. North Korea invaded the South Korea on June 25th 1950, which became the start of the three year Korean War. The Korean War had US and other UN forces intervene to defend South Korea from North Korean attacks supported by the Chinese. The area that divides the north and south has become known as the Demilitarized Zone. Thereafter, South Korea achieved rapid economic growth, with per capita income rising to roughly 20 times the level of North Korea.
