Through a person's course of life, they encounter both good and bad things, which they grow from. These things will somehow shape or define the person they become. The book, Their Eyes Were Watching God is a story about self-discovery. Zora Neale Hurston was probably born in 1901 in Eatonville, Florida. Many of her books' settings are in Eatonville like Jonah's Gourd Vine and Their Eyes Were Watching God. This book was written in 1937 and tells a story about a woman, Janie, who goes through a journey to find herself. She married three times to Logan Killicks, Joe Starks, and Tea Cake. Logan Killicks was much older than Janie and owned sixty acres of land. Joe Starks was very protective and strict with Janie. Tea Cake, on the other hand, was younger than Janie and allowed her to do what she wanted. He treated her as an equal partner. Through Janie's marriages, she found peace and self-fulfillment. Janie's first marriage to Logan Killicks was not about love but for protection. She was forced to marry Logan Killicks by her grandmother because he was a stable man with sixty acres of land. She though that '" de nigger woman is de mule uh de world so fur as ah can see"' (Hurston 29). She thought that black women were mules and they are just used to work and nothing else. Logan was not a bad man but just not romantic, and he ignored Janie's thoughts or feelings.
