Ordinary People The book Ordinary People by Judith Guest shows a lot of what American literature is about, particularly the challenges of grief and despair and the effects of relationships. The main characters have tight knit connections to each other, whether they are family or not, and everything one does affects the rest. There are plenty of lessons to be learned throughout this book. The story follows a son and a father, Conrad and Calvin Jarrett and their issues as human beings and as family. The story starts with explaining a suicide attempt that Conrad tries. Later, the reader finds that Conrad’s brother was killed in a car accident, where Conrad survived. He was feeling guilty for surviving when his brother did not, so he tries to kill himself.
