Other parties may stand against the two dominant parties, but in a two-party system these parties win few seats and exercise little power. Britain has been seen as having a system in which two major parties have regularly competed for all seats in the country and alternated in power with working majorities (i. ... As the table shows Labour and the Conservatives have dominated general elections and the House of Commons since 1945- no other political party has achieved more than 20% of the vote. The two main parties have always succeeded in gaining over 70% of the vote and, ignoring the special circumstances of 1983 and 1987 when a strong alliance between the Liberals and the short-lived Social Democrat Party achieved unusual popularity, the figure has never been below 75%. In 2001 the two main parties still gained nearly three-quarters of the votes over 85% of the seats in the House of Commons. ...
