Brunei Darussalam (official name) - Darussalam means The Abode of Peace - achieved its independance 1984. Brunei unlike other previous British colonies was never fully ruled by the British government. Instead Brunei was a British protectorate state meaning the then British govenor in Brunei would only have command over the foreign affairs of Brunei whilst the king or sultan of Brunei would have full control over the internal or local affairs of the country.
