After World War I ended in 1917, many things in America began to change. People started to think differently and stood up for what they believed. Women started to wear make-up, cut their hair almost as short as the men, and wore short skirts and silk stockings instead of the thick cotton stockings. Not only did they dress differently they started to act differently as well. They took up men’s bad habits of drinking and smoking. This was not accepted everywhere because it was not lady like for a girl to drink and smoke. During this time organized crime groups were also on the rise due to the prohibition of alcohol. The United Sates was changing; many people thought it was for the worst, others for the better. One thing was certain though, people started to take their thoughts and beliefs and show them to the world. Some people would contrast against social groups and would mark individuality. To have individuality meant that you were a total character distinguished by others. Most of the individuals that lived in the 1920s helped change the world as it is today.
