... Despite the fact that the war had ended, the union was in dire need of reconstruction. The issue of slavery still remained on the political “chopping block” of the country’s to do list and westward expansion was slowly but surely filling out the already declared 48 states. In an attempt to follow through with southern Reconstruction, Congress passed the Homestead Act of 1862, the Morrill Land Grant Act, and others that aided the economic advancement of the country in general.
