This extract from the 1937 Manual of the Reich Chamber of Culture is evidence of the key ambition and eagerness of the National Socialist Party to shape the popular culture by seizing full control over all forms of art.
According to Sax and Kuntz in “Inside Hitler’s Germany,” Hitler has pushed, from the very rise of the Nazi Party until the end of World War II, the fusion of art and politics as means toward his ideal of the Third Reich. The foreseen benefit of such fusion was that, once a totalitarian government controls what the masses see through art, the government can then influence the population by solely permitting art that supports its principles. As the Führer, Hitler has gained this control over art and exploited successfully this method of manipulation – shaping art for the purpose of politics. Specifically, the Nazis shaped art into propaganda to sell the Nazi Ideology and art into entertainment to distract the population from the horrors during the implementation of this Ideology.
