The Crucible, a film directed by Nicholas Hytner, is based on a series of events which took place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. ... Another leading actor in The Crucible is Paul Scofield who plays the role of Judge Danforth, the magistrate who presides over the Salem witch trials. ... Although Arthur Miller, the screenplay writer, strongly followed the events which occurred in Salem in 1692, he did add some fiction to his film. ... Otherwise many of the themes and events described throughout the film were accurate according to historical content. For example, several of the names used in the film were the names of actual people living in the times when the Salem witch trials were taking place. ... Moreover, intolerance, a main theme in The Crucible, was present in 1692 Salem. ... The Crucible expressed this theme just as the people who lived in 1692 Salem had. Along with intolerance, status, or reputation, and hysteria are other key themes in The Crucible which hold true to historical content.
