African Americans and the Civil War The Civil War was a fight for the emancipation of slaves in the United States during the 1860’s. African Americans fought for their beliefs throughout the war, usually for the Union cause. The slaves not only fought a battle for the North, they fought for the certain unalienable rights that are guaranteed to all Americans in the Constitution. ... During the Civil War era, Union commanders and their black troops faced additional hardships due to the plague of racism, which was manifested in their fight for freedom. ... He also believed that the black man would give the Union a powerful advantage in the war by simply adding manpower to the Union side. ... In the beginning, involvement of the African Americans was a very slow process. Both free Africans-Americans and runaway slaves joined the fight. ... Approximately 180,000 black men served under a white Union commander during the Civil War. The Unites States Colored Troops (USCT) suffered over 68,000 casualties and approximately 37,000 deaths during the Civil War on the Union side. The war offered newly freed slaves an opportunity to make something of themselves. ... The African Americans actually broadened their worlds while enlisted for a fighting cause. Many Union soldiers in the Civil War had not previously seen a black man in their lives until they enrolled in the armed services. Michael Shaara gives a great vision of the white soldiers thoughts of African Americans when he says, “You saw very few black men in New England. ... Although the African Americans did receive some things during the war, they also endured many hardships. ... Not until the near end of the war did the black soldiers come close to making the same pay as white soldiers. ... Money was only one of the hardships that black soldiers were forced to deal with due to the prejudices and racism that took place during the Civil War. Racism and prejudice were two major causes of the so-called hardships that African Americans dealt with during the Civil War. Racism was a big problem that formed between the whites and blacks in the Civil War. The South had stronger penalties for the blacks that were captured as prisoners of war and the white commanders that were leading them… In accordance with President Lincolns wishes, you men are advised that the Confederate Congress has issued a proclamation. ... The black men still participated in the war regardless of the penalties they would reap if they were caught. Therefore, the Confederates very seldom took black prisoners of war, but rather hung or shot the men on the spot. ... Fights often broke out when troops were mixed up together, since many of the white Union men had never been placed around African Americans. ... Before this war began, many of my regiment had never seen a Negro. ... Black soldiers did not see much combat duty while they served in the war. |
