Lenin’s dedication and passion for the Marxist cause was vital in the Bolshevik seizure of power. ... After the execution of his brother, Lenin devoted his time to fighting the Tsarist regime that had killed his brother. Lenin and his wife, along with a small group of revolutionaries worked tirelessly to bring about the change they believed so passionately in. The opportunity for revolution, however, came about through a series of fortunate events that Lenin and the Bolsheviks managed to manipulate in their favour. The weakness and lack of unity between and within the Provisional Government and the armed forces provided Lenin with the perfect opportunity to seize power. The role of other Bolsheviks, especially Leon Trotsky must also be evaluated in order to truly evaluate the role Lenin played in the November Revolution of 1917. As well as this, the immediate steps taken by Lenin after the seizure of power, ensuring the revolution’s survival, are important in determining the role of Lenin in cementing the Bolsheviks steadfastly into power.
Lenin was born Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, into a comfortable household in 1870. ... “Vladimir (Lenin) received his first revolutionary impulses from his terrorist brother…” and after the execution of his brother, Lenin became absorbed in studying the communist ideals of Karl Marx. The execution of his brother led Lenin to feel contempt for the state of Russian society and Lenin began his struggle to implement the teachings of Karl Marx. ... During this time, Lenin and his cohorts were busy spreading communist propaganda among the proletariat in the huge factories of Petrograd. This included the “Ishkra” (spark) published by Lenin and his cohorts living in exile in Switzerland. ... This uprising cannot be claimed to be the work of any particular organisation however it greatly helped Lenin in his plans for Bolshevik power.
The March revolution had happened so fast, that it took Lenin by surprise. ... The Germans were the only people prior to the Bolshevik insurrection that did not underestimate Lenin and the Bolsheviks, they saw great value in aiding Lenin’s return to Russia. They thought that if Lenin was able to seize power, they would be able to concentrate on fighting on the western front and swing the balance of the war. So Lenin was rushed in a sealed private train to Russia from Switzerland through Germany to Russia. This was not the only support the Germans gave Lenin, they allowed and helped Lenin publish his communist propaganda and smuggle it into Russia through other Bolsheviks, and this would have its consequence for Lenin.
Lenin returned to Russia in mid April, and saw it was balancing precariously in a duality of power.
