Although ancient writing traditions exist on the African continent, most Africans today, as in the past, are primarily oral peoples, and their art forms are oral rather than literary. ... There are fundamental differences among African and Western cultures—and the arts and technologies they create and value—to whether those cultures are oral or written. Africa’s modern literature grows out of a classic tradition of storytelling, struggle and historical remembrance that has existed in Africa. Oral literature ranges from the proverbs, poetry, dilemma tales, and tales by moonlight and an array of aphorisms and poetic eulogy to elaborate stories memorized and performed by professional praise singers attached to royal courts. African literature portrays the issues of “traditional” versus “modern” through the oral literature in griots and Shaka and written literature in the works of Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka.

In traditional oral culture, knowledge is sacred and immanent in the spoken word. ... Oral literature is flexible, spiritual, and have no single definitive version.
To understand and appreciate African storytelling traditions, one needs to study them in the context of the cultures which produce the stories. African proverbs and stories draw upon the collective wisdom of oral peoples, express their "structures of meaning, feeling, thought, and expression," and thus serve important social and ethical purposes. ... Oral literature, like the cultures that produce them, constantly evolve and change across time, culture, place and regional style, performer, and audience for a variety of reasons. ... Oral literary forms is not simply pre-colonial, ancient, or traditional. ... Oral literatures are performed and created by women and men, and many African written literary expressions incorporate the forms and tropes of oral literatures.
