Ashikaga Shogunate
In 1333, the Emperor Go-Daigo made a desperate attempt to restore the aristocratic power to the Japanese government. However, this so-called Kemmu restoration was short-lived. The landowners neglected to give their support to the officials and the out-of-date administrative system. Thus, Ashikaga Takauji succeeded in gaining the power of the imperial court in Kyoto on April 15, 1336. The out-of-power Go-Daigo fled to southern Kyoto and founded his own court. Yet another emperor took over Kyoto and became the emperor there. Two years later, Ashikaga finally took over the court, founding the Muromachi period.
